It was a lovely day under the Twinwillow, the warm weather with just enough of a chill on the breeze to keep his heavy pelt from making it unbearable. Boldstar was stretched along one of the sturdy roots that made up the freshkill hollow, lounging like a lion in a patch of sunshine that came and went with clouds and the movements of the willow's branches above.
The big tom dangled a paw over the edge, claws digging satisfyingly into the bark. He really should organize something and be making sure the clan was running. Though maybe the peace he was enjoying wasn't just an illusion.

A tan blur brushed through camp, eyes only for the lump of grey fur that caught his eye at the fresh kill pile. Nettlekit found his way towards the piling prey items, before his maw plucked a single small mouse from within, yanking it by the tail with a good few tugs before dislodging it from underneath a bigger fish.
Only when he successfully carried the small mouse in his jaws did he peek up towards the massive cat who dangled himself leisurely upon its roots. Boldstar was just above him, and the kit tried to remain nonchalant as his still-blue eyes caught his own in greeting.
" 'Ello, B'ldstar." He mewed simply, ears flicking with acknowledgement before he attempted to claw his way onto a root beside him. Once he had set his prey on the arch of the wood, he lifted his head to look at him. "Are you hungry? I was going to try to strip off the fluff first."

"Getting rid of the fluff is a good first step." Boldstar gave a purr. Though he was slightly concerned to see the Nettlekit wandering alone. Though he was getting to be a very big kit, if Boldstar's own memory held Nettlekit needed to be apprenticed next moon. Now that was food for thought. "I ate already this morning. Two minnows. They were delicious." And it was early in the moon for the river to be open enough for fishing. It was a blessing one had to count carefully.

Willowfrost could probably use the fluff, the cream ticked kit thought to himself. Or to stuff in some den hole. Or maybe line his own bedding. Hmm, what other uses was there for mouse fluff? Balancing on top of the tapered root with his back claws, his front paws played with the creature in front of him, turning and arranging the creature.
He started with his claws, carefully raking the tiny mouse until - suddenly feeling off set, the kit grabbed the root, stiffening so that the end of his fringed tail spiked. He pretended not to be embarrassed, but he was sure the big leader caught him in the act. "I don't think I've ever had a minnow... What's the largest fish you've ever caught, Boldstar? I bet a big fish could feed a great many cats." He mused as if he knew from firsthand experience despite just admitting to not eating minnow.
Nettlwkit went back to his task, already creating a small cloud of fur scattered beside him.

Boldstar kept the chuckle he felt in his head when the kit nearly tumbled from the root. Fortunately they weren't high enough that falling was a great concern. It would be a few bumps, bruises, and maybe a lesson in balance. Hopefully Duckfeather wouldn't hold him responsible if the little one took a tumble.
Then it was a question about his largest fish. Boldstar gave the matter a moment of serious through, complete with a contemplative expression for Nettlekit's benefit. "I caught a trout longer than my tail once." He waved his plumed tail for effect, stressing exactly how large this trout really was. "It was colored like a rainbow on its belly."

Nettlekit tried to imagine a fish with a rainbow on its belly. Would it be easy to see in the river if it glowed like that in the water? Its lenth was certainly impressive considering the extended length of the tomcat's tail plume. He had no reason to doubt a knowledgeable cat like Boldstar and his sky blue eyes widened with the image.
"You must be real strong to wrestle that to shore." He had never seen a larger cat, but then again, he hadn't seen the other clan cats. Pfft, as if any surpassed his leader. Surely he was the biggest cat in the forest. His thoughts her puntuated by precise kneading of mouse flesh, scrapping away the fur with care, both care not to soil the fluff and care to remain grounded, as he were, on the roots of Twinwillow.
"Do we just eat fish? Or are they like mice - with many uses?"

Boldstar was taken aback for a second by the intuitive question that the young kit asked him. It was the sort of question he wouldn't expect from all but the most curious of apprentices. Not many naturally thought about prey beyond food...
"You'd have to check with Willowfrost. I don't think she's ever asked for fish to be kept for her..." Now that was something to consider... Willowfrost and her opinion on... Well... It was something to think about, and to not get too far ahead of himself before she'd been consulted. He shook off the conceptions that crossed his mind. "Does your mother know you came out here?"
Two hazel eyes peered from the nursery, glancing out and over towards the freshkill pile and the direction his brother had scampered. Moments later, a cream tabby form slunk from said nursery and crept towards the freshkill pile himself. Mintkit's tummy had been growling and when Nettlekit had gone to grab himself something to eat, Duckfeather had encouraged Mintkit to follow his brother and get something to eat himself. He grabbed his own small mouse and trotted over to where Nettlekit had scrambled up, only for his hazel eyes to go wide and he froze mid-step when he realized Boldstar was there too, talking to Nettlekit. Oh Starclan, what did he do now? He had already tried to join his brother, but that was Boldstar! Their leader! He remained frozen, paw lifted in midair as his brain whirled, thoughts spinning as he tried to figure out what to do.

Blue eyes earnest in Boldstar's direction, he waited, nearly on his toes for the answer and was momentarily disappointed when the big cat seemed without a certain answer. Maybe Boldstar wasn't the best cat to ask about such things, but nevertheless, he'd be sure to follow up on his question to Willowfrost when next he saw her.
It was when the old tom questioned him that he stopped short of his task, an ear flick and a wryness entering his gaze. It was the sort of pause that one might expect a naughty kit to display, but Nettlekit, assured of his presence, drapped his tail over the edge of the root before finally taking a bite of mouse.
"Yes, Boldstar." He mewed politely once he had swallowed. "Just out to grab some food." A nosy, independent kit he may be, but in this case, Nettlekit had the approval of his mother. He wasn't about to go rooting in Willowfrost's medicinal stock - although now he had good reason to see if she was around.
He barely acknowledged the appearance of his brother. Slow to act, as usual. With a yawn, the tomkit glanced over towards the shell-stiff kit and chuckled. "Mintkit, stop gawking like that fish in the fresh kill pile and come eat!

"Nettlekit, there's no need for insults." Boldstar rebuked the kit gently. Nettlekit was as bold as Mintkit was shy, and that situation really didn't help the matter at all. "If you come up here and join us I'll tell you both a story while you eat. You just have to let me know what kind of a story you want to hear."
((Sorry this was so uninspired, it's one of this mornings.))
The mouse was still clamped tightly in Mintkit's jaws as his brother began to tease him about gawking. He wasn't gawking! He was just trying to decide if he had had time to sneak back to the nursery with his lunch. But then Boldstar actually noticed him and that choice was taken from him. the light colored kit barely bit back his squeak when Boldstar spoke. His eyes were wide and he was about to hesitate again when his tummy growled loudly, having smelled food and being impatient for the kit to fill it. Swiftly, he nodded to Boldstar's coaxing and scrambled up next to Nettlekit before setting the mouse down. "O-okay." The small word was almost too soft to be heard but it didn't take long for him to defluff and tuck into his meal. Then he realized he had been asked what kind of story he wanted to hear, so through his mouthful he murmured, voice still bordering on audible. "D-don' care...."

The triangles of his ears fluttered against his head at the rebuff. Surely he was trying to encourage his brother not to be so slow - he was doing him a favor! He masked his frustration with another mouthful of prey, sinking with the slight admonishment of the big tom, no matter how gentle.
But his attention was grabbed once more, and again, his eyes found Boldstar. There was a sparkle of excitement lodged within. Rebuke forgotten, the tip of his fringed tail twitched furiously - not acknowledging that the tufted tail tip might batter his brother as he hauled his way onto Twinwillow's root.
"Tell us a story about Starclan!" The cream ticked kit imposed with a pitch of its kitish voice. Licking his lips, he took another bite of mouse, with increasing relish. Nothing made prey more delicious than a good story.

Boldstar considered the kits' demand for a story about StarClan. It was just down to which story to tell. There were so many he could tell, but the best one was easy to pick out. "Okay. I'll tell you the story about how StarClan helped the Great Cat Clans to be able to deal with Twolegs." The big tom pulled his paws up under his body, settling into a more stable position for storytelling.
"Twolegs are very dangerous creatures. Even back in the days of the Great Clans they were able to kill even the massive TigerClanners. And despite that Twolegs aren't smart enough to speak to cats! Because the twolegs couldn't be reasoned with the Leaders and Medicine Cats of the Great Clans gathered at StarClan to ask for help." A pause to build suspense. "What do you think that StarClan told them?"
Mintkit watched with still wide hazel eyes as the older tom settled himself more comfortably to tell them the story. Never taking his eyes off Boldstar, he pricked his ears to listen as he reached down to take another bite, feeling the first mouthful settle into his empty belly. As his mouth was filled with the delicious taste of mouse once again, he paused as the question was posed. What do you think Starclan told them? He swiftly shook his head, already enraptured, with his mouth full and no answer he could produce this fast. Forgetting to swallow, he waited eagerly, wanting to hear more.

Duckfeather had done well in instilling clan stories into her kits. Nettlekit was no different as he eagerly awaited the big tom's tale - notably pleased that his suggestion was ultimately considered. Few tales were more inspiring than tales of Starclan - so full of wonder! Back end teetering with excitement, he instantly fell into a respectful silence as he listened to Boldstar's voice.
His attention was punctuated by quick bites of mouse, savoring the flesh of the creature with a soft purr. A whisper of a sound before his ears perked to attention at the direct question. He threw his blue stare towards his brother, who seemed content to merely wait in anticipation - but Nettlekit knew the answer! He wanted his voice to be heard!
Licking at a stray hair on his chest, he replied. "Starclan said that the Great Clans can't be big anymore! They needed to be small to survive!" His tail gave a soft thump, eyes carrying a note of pride and warmth as he beamed at Boldstar.

"That's right, Nettlekit." Boldstar purred happily that the kit clearly knew the story he was telling. "So StarClan summoned a great storm that raged at Fourtrees. The cats who became ThunderClan were split in two by Thunder. The ones that became RiverClan were split by Rains. The ones that would be WindClan were split by the raging winds, and the cats who would be ShadowClan were split by Shadows."
"RiverClan's first leader was named that day by StarClan alongside her Deputy. They were Riverstar and Ragingrapids. Riverstar had to gather up the other cats who had been split by rains, and that was how RiverClan came to be. We carry the blood of all the Great Clans in our veins because of the day StarClan split them."
Mintkit swallowed his mouthful and kneaded the root under his paws, as close to dancing on his toes as he got, indifferent to his brother's tail batting him. "D-do the stories say what they looked like? O-or just their names?" He was sure he had asked Duckfeather this, but at the very moment he asked, he couldn't remember her answer. His hazel eyes gleamed in eager curiosity. "A-are there any cats related directly o-or is it just kinda there in all of us?" Then came the last question, almost breathless and awestruck. "Y-you got your nine lives from them! D-did Riverstar give you one of your lives?"

Nettlekit listened in earnest. Few things brought him more pleasure in his kit life than listening to stories of the clans, especially if they involved the mysterious, mystical cats of Starclan.
He couldn't imagine looking over the whole forest through a single pair of eyes - to be so high up, so remote, and yet so close. And that the blood of the Great Clan ran through his veins. Strangely humbling.
When Mintkit started asking questions, he swallowed his meal. Licking his lips with fervor before he piped up with his own question. "Yes, which cats gave you your lives? Did you know any of them?"

"No, Riverstar didn't give me one of my lives." Boldstar laughed slightly, enjoying the enthusiasm of the kits. "My father always told me that Riverstar was a black she-cat with the shadows of spots in her pelt."
Then his mind turned to the big question that the kits asked. It was a little personal, but they were young and it was alright that they wanted to know. Most adults seemed to shy away from talk of his lives. "I don't have time to tell you about all of them today, but one was my sire. So yes, I knew him well when he was alive. I look a great deal like him, so you even have a good idea what he looked like." Not that your own father showing up to your leader ceremony was exceptional. He expected that many leaders met one or more of their deceased family when they underwent the ceremony to receive the nine lives.
Mintkit had taken the moment to grab a few more mouthfuls of mouse, trying to finish his meal so he could focus on what Boldstar was telling them. Swallowing his last mouseful and running a tongue along his whiskers, it was time for another question. "S-so who was the most important cat to you who gave you a life? W-was it your sire? W-was there a life that you got that was m-more special to you than the rest?" Even though Boldstar was telling a Starclan story, their questions were starting to stray and while they were allowed to ask questions, he was going to! This was probably the boldest he had been around his leader that he remembered but these were questions that now burned in his mind and he was curious! "H-how did the leader before you lose their last life? W-was it scary watching them lose it? H-have you lost any lives? W-was it scary? W-what happens when you lose a life? D-do you see Starclan?"

Imagining such a great Starclanner such as Riverclan could have been an overwhelming task, but at Boldstar's description, made it a little easier. Shadows of spots, then.
Maybe the smaller clanners still carried the coats of the Great Clan. Spots and swirls and stripes! He glanced down at his own tabby patterning, some of his striping was more prominent in places than others...
He hadn't a clue about what kind of lives might be more important than others, but he spoke anyway. "If Boldstar and his sire were close, then that would make sense." His maw lowered towards what was left of the mouse, picking the carcass clean with a few more choosier bites. After he smiled, a slight purr tickled his chest.
"Cottonbright said Boldstar dove into the river to save someone. He lost a life then - but a life for a life is a fair trade."

Boldstar's ears flickered at the barrage of questions from the normally shy kit. At least this proved out that with the right mentor he would be able to blossom into a true warrior with courage and drive. "I did die after saving a someone from the river. But I didn't die until after. It was something called a 'dry drowning'. You inhale water and then it kills you later. That was terrifying. I didn't know what was happening until I was already dying and no-one could do anything about it."
It truly had been the most terrifying way to die. At least when it had been the eagle he'd known what was happening. "You do meet StarClan when you die. At least when you die with extra lives. You only spend a moment with them before they heal your body and send you back."
Mintkit glanced at his brother as he chirped up about Bioldstar and his sire and then about what Cottonbright had told him about Boldstar losing a life. When Boldstar didn't respond about the lives thing, the little tabby and white tom figured that his brother was probably right and was content to let his leader continue on. Dry drowning? That sounded as scary as actual drowning! As Boldstar clarified that it was scary, his ears fell back as his hazel eyes went wide. "I-is it easy to dry drown? H-how do you know if y-you're okay after you get out of the w-water?" He relaxed a little and his ears began to perk again as some of the fear ebbed into awe when the older tom began to speak of Starclan again. "D-did they scold you for losing a life w-when they healed you? O-or did they tell you g-good job?"

Nettlekit, finished with his meal, rolled his blue eyes at the extent of Mintkit's questions - or rather one in particular. That would made the ends of his tail bristle with annoyance. "Of course Starclan didn't scold Boldstar for losing a life! That's what they're there for!" Did Starclan have such disregard for life that they would gift extra lives only to scorn the leader who used them for the good of his clan?

Boldstar's tail tip flickered in annoyance at Nettlekit's tone. "StarClan would have told me off properly if I'd wasted any of those lives, you can bet your tail on it." He felt the need to correct the kit, but direct scolding seemed never to last for long. Nettlekit was already perfectly named. His apprenticeship wouldn't require any name consideration at all. Then he moved on to Mintkit's worried question.
"It's hard to dry drown. You have to have to inhale enough water for it to take time to cause a problem, but not enough that it's immediately a problem. I think I'm the only cat whose done in anytime recently."
