Like the sun, I may burn fiercely, but it's my fire that warms those I hold dear.

━✦━✶━✺━☀️━✺━✶━✦━

Ah the cold, the enemy of all the clans. Sunbear thought to herself as a slight chill tickled her skin beneath her thick ruddy fur. Granted she did have it easier in leaf-bare, but it would certainly be weird as if was her first after retiring, the WindClan elder wondered how she would fare with being hidden away in the elder's den, waiting and not helping out with catching prey for the clan, Sunbear narrowed her eyes at the thought and flicked her torn ear with indignation before letting out a sigh, lifting up her head and glancing at the den's opening, wondering if Beewhisker's kittens or even Brightmaple's would be brave enough to scamper into the elder's den. Only time would tell she supposed

With her paws outstretched, Sunbear let out a short groan, making sure to stretch out her claws as well, giving them a few licks to rid them of any spare gunk if any had built up from lack of use over the moons. Oh how Sunbear hardly stood sane in the elder's den, sometimes she'd even leave camp for walks to clear her head. Not like any cat would be able to stop the huge she-cat from going anywhere in particular.. maybe smaller gaps however but she had not interest in what hid in smaller spaces unless it was something she could eat.

The heavy ruddy she-cat glanced at how the sun fell onto the earth, it was well past dawn, but not quite sunhigh yet, Sunbear was getting used to sleeping in late, perhaps being an elder was making her soft, to soft...

BAYFLOWER 🌊 THEY/HIM 🌼 WARRIOR
“Another cold day. Just what I needed.” Bayflower muttered unhappily as they dragged themselves out of the nursery after wishing Beewhisker and their kits an enjoyable nap. Oh how they just wanted to curl up in their nest and sleep through the entirety of leafbare. They remembered how their kin had passed away around this time of year. Well not really. It had been much further into leafbare but  close enough. They had mostly finished grieving their kin, finding a new joy in their new life with their new friends.

Bayflower scanned camp for something to do. Maybe they could see if the elders needed something? The feline was sure that the coming cold wouldn’t be kind to the bones of the older clan cats at all, remembering the way they’d see their sire’s dam, Silverrose had struggled immensely. And with that, Bayflower padded over hoping to be of some use to the elders. Popping their head in, they saw that Sunbear was the only one there. A bit strange but not shocking. Maybe they went out to do things.

“Hi Sunbear.” Bayflower purred, dragging the feline out of her own world before padding over and plopping themselves down right in front of her. It wasn’t like Bayflower and Sunbear interacted frequently but the black feline still found comfort in her presence. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind them sorta invading her personal space. They’d understand if she wanted some distance between the two of them. “How are you? Anything you want a little help with?” they offered, looking around the den to see if they could find anything to fix.

━✦━✶━✺━☀️━✺━✶━✦━

Sunbear flicked her ear as Bayflower settled in front of her, their presence oddly comforting despite her usual preference for solitude. She gave them a sidelong glance, her hazel eyes narrowing slightly, but it wasn’t from annoyance—more from habit than anything else. She let out a small grunt, stretching out her paws as she prepared for the inevitable offer of help. "You don’t have to hover, Bayflower" she muttered, her voice gruff as ever. "I can fetch what I need by myself." Her tone was sharp, but there was no real bite behind it, more of an automatic response than an actual refusal.

She shifted slightly, her stiff muscles protesting against the cold that always seemed to settle in her bones this time of year. The aches were worse than usual, and though she hated to admit it, the coming leaf-bare was making her movements slower and more cumbersome. A small part of her wanted to accept Bayflower’s help outright, but her pride kept her stubborn. Sunbear glanced at Bayflower, their dark eyes bright and expectant. "You young cats are always so quick to try and help" she continued after a beat, her voice softening ever so slightly. "Think we old ones can’t manage, don’t you?" She let out a dry chuckle, though it lacked any real amusement.

After a moment of silence, Sunbear sighed and looked around the den. It could use some tidying, she supposed. The moss lining her nest was thinning, and she hadn’t bothered to refresh it in days, too proud to ask anyone else to do it for her. Her tail flicked as she contemplated. "If you really insist on doing something" she grumbled, her voice low, "you could bring me some fresh moss. But I don’t need any doting. Just... make yourself useful if you're determined to hang around." She glanced at Bayflower again, this time with the faintest trace of a smirk tugging at her lips. "Not that I can't do it myself. But I suppose it won't hurt to save me the trouble today."

She stretched again, wincing slightly as a dull ache shot through her hind leg. "Just don’t think this means you’ll be fetching my bedding every time you see me" she added, her usual gruffness returning, though there was a hint of warmth in her eyes. "I’ve still got some strength left in these old bones, after all." Sunbear let her gaze linger on Bayflower for a moment, feeling an odd sense of ease in their presence. Despite her tough exterior, she couldn't deny that she appreciated the younger warrior's company, even if she'd never say it outright. "But if you’re gonna stay, make yourself useful and stop looking like a kit waiting for praise" she teased, her voice taking on a rare, lighter tone.

BAYFLOWER 🌊 THEY/HIM 🌼 WARRIOR
Bayflower watched Sunbear with eyes that almost looked like doe eyes, shuffling a bit to let her stretch her paws. “I know you can fetch what you need by yourself. You’re the most capable elder in all the clans.” the black feline purred “But. I like helping. Are you really gonna deny poor ole me the enjoyment of being helpful?” the black-pelted feline asked with a mock pout, knowing that Sunbear’s words and action currently didn’t have any true bite or feelings of annoyance behind them.

“Okay! I promise you that I’ll go find the freshest moss in all of WindClan territory tomorrow.” the dark-eyed warrior declared with a smile. “But for now… Maybe I could tidy the nursery.” they hummed. Seeing as Barleyswipe and Emberback were currently out and about it was the perfect time to just tidy the elders’ den some in general.

When Sunbear winced, Bayflower whipped their head around, concerned before responding. “I know you’re very capable like I said earlier, Sunbear.” Bayflower said to her. “But maybe just for this leafbare I should fetch your bedding for you. My sire’s dam had the same problem as you. She was very capable but it was a pain to walk in leafbare. I don’t want to see you do that to yourself as well just because you’re stubborn.”

When she teased them for being like a kit waiting on praise they were embarrassed because they knew she was right. Since they were an apprentice they had been that way. Always seeking praise and compliments. Always wanting to be told that they were lovely even if they weren’t the most handsome tom or best hunter.

━✦━✶━✺━☀️━✺━✶━✦━

Despite not enjoying being doted on by anyone, Bayflower sure was willing to do it as a moments notice, while she didn’t want it that way, she appreciated Bayflower’s loyalty and care for those they were close to. Sunbear let out a chuckle, Bayflower’s worry for something so small like joint pain was amusing, but perhaps it was because her family group hardly cared for her health… well, Scarletsight, Hawktooth and Bigfoot didn’t anyway.

"It’s not like I’m forcing my body to do what it can’t, Bayflower. I just have joint pains it’s normal in leaf-bare, you act like I’m about a jump away from StarClan" Sunbear responded, twitching her white whiskers in a mix of amusement and frustration. She was well able to take care of herself. But Bayflower wasn’t going to change their ways because she tells them, StarClan knows she’s tried that. "The dens done need cleaning right away, just relax for a moment Bayflower, you’re far too tense for your own good" she added giving the black warrior a few affectionate licks between the ears and pulling them closer with one big paw.

Sunbear’s ears twitched somewhat alert of her surroundings, not for any particular reason except for habit, whenever she wanted to speak of something personal, she wanted to make sure there was no onlookers or eavesdroppers. When she had found none, Sunbear returned her hazel gaze towards Bayflower. "So how are your offspring doing? Is Beewhisker taking it well?" She asked giving her chest a few momentary licks "What’d they name the little creatures?" She added, a hint of amusement in her regularly bland tone, Sunbear had no idea why, but Bayflower was like family to her, even though they were a young warrior when she had a family in WindClan to begin with. They are just… special

“I know that you’re not forcing your body to do what it can’t, Sunbear. I know that you just have joint pains and that it’s normal in leaf-bare. I apologise for acting so dramatically but I can’t help but be a little worried, y’know?” At her words, the black feline realised how unnecessarily tense they were and became embarrassed, settling down by her side again, purring at the affectionate care that she was providing them. “Sorry.”

“Berrykit and Cedarkit are doing well.” they told her. “Happy and healthy little fellas they are. Beewhisker’s taking it well too. They’re strong.”

Sunbear listened to Bayflower's words with a quiet hum, her sharp gaze softening ever so slightly. She wasn’t one for showing much emotion, but Bayflower’s concern touched her in ways she’d never openly admit. Letting out a long sigh, she gave a firm yet gentle flick of her tail against his flank.

"There’s no need for apologies, Bayflower" she rumbled, her voice low but carrying a rare warmth. "It's natural to worry about those you care for... and you care too much for your own good sometimes." Her eyes glinted with affection that she hid behind her usual bluntness. "But these old joints have been through more than one leaf-bare. They'll hold up. Besides, we’ve got kits to worry about, not some worn-out elder like me."

She shifted slightly, her body relaxed but sturdy as always, an unmovable rock in the face of time. The mention of Berrykit and Cedarkit brought a small, approving nod. "Happy and healthy, huh? That’s all that matters. Sounds like you’ve done well with them. And Beewhisker..." She hesitated for a second, the fondness she felt for Bayflower slipping into her tone. They didn't care a lot for Beewhisker, but they were WindClan, and she would die for WindClan too chirpy, she always seemed to think when Beewhisker flashed in her mind. But they were strong, even if they didn't really know that yet "Strong parent... like you."

For a moment, she paused, her gaze lingering on him before looking back out into the camp, her paw resting close to his. "Keep them close. Time’s precious when they’re still young." She said no more, but the purring sound Bayflower made resonated between them. Sunbear quietly enjoyed the silence, the closeness between them lingering for a moment and making the air feel warm and gentle. Sunbear liked Bayflower's company, as much as their doting frustrated her.

BAYFLOWER 🌊 THEY/HIM 🌼 WARRIOR
When Sunbear assured the tom that there was no need for them to apologise they smiled sheepishly. “I mean. Is it even possible to care too much?” the black-pelted feline questioned, wrapping the short tail around their body neatly. Bayflower listened patiently as Sunbear briefly explained how her joints had carried her throughout leafbare before and how they should be worrying about kits instead of her. “I could always just worry about both kits and elders together, right?”

As the elder continued to speak, the dark-eyed warrior continued to listen, appearing almost a little like a kit who was patiently listening to a nursery story even though all she was talking about was how the kits were precious. “I’ll make sure to keep them close.” Bayflower responded before drifting into the comfortable silence with Sunbear. If Bayflower was being honest with themself, they were sure that, deep down, nothing could make them forget that they were Kestrelswipe’s kits. But they loved Berrykit and Cedarkit. And that was all that mattered.

Sunbear purred softly, her amber eyes warm with affection as she listened to Bayflower. "No, I suppose not" she chuckled lightly at his question, her tone gentle. "Caring too much never did anyone harm. If anything, it keeps those around you safe." She stretched her paws out slowly, feeling the familiar stiffness in her joints, but paid it little mind. She wasn’t about to let the aches stop her from enjoying moments like this.

At his mention of worrying about both the kits and her, Sunbear gave him a fond nudge. "You’re a good cat, Bayflower. But those kits, they’re your future. I’ve had my moons, and I’m proud of what I’ve lived through." Her voice held a quiet strength, the wisdom of a cat who had seen many seasons. "They’re the ones who need your strength now. Just keep them close, like you said."

She fell silent for a moment, her gaze softening as she thought of Berrykit and Cedarkit. "They’ll be alright," she murmured, almost to herself. "With a cat like you watching over them, how could they not be?" A small smile tugged at her muzzle, and she gave Bayflower a look that was both motherly and knowing, as if she could see through his reservations, but wouldn’t push him to admit them.
