With the moon’s light hidden the spirits of Silverpelt have an easier time finding those spirits who have strayed so that they can be returned to StarClan. Grand Omens

“Grand Omens” are those that every cat knows well, and the general meanings of are crystal clear even when a non-medicine cat sees them. It may well take a Medicine Cat to unravel the true significance of such an omen, but everyone would know of the occurrence of one.

Clouds Over The Moon

Durring a Gathering

The “Clouds over the Gathering Moon” omen is the greatest and best known of all the omens. It holds true only during the course of a gathering, and is only in response to those actions taken at a gathering. It is the mark of StarClan having abandoned the gathering itself, refusing to tolerate the events going on there. It is an extremely severe omen and is rare. More common is the swirling of clouds at the edge of the moon, marking displeasure. Most incidents that turn StarClan from the gathering involve physical violence.

At Other Times

While clouds covering the moon when a gathering is not in session lacks the clarity of a similar sign during a gathering, this positioning of clouds is not an auspicious omen. While it may not mean StarClan is unhappy, it does mean that things are darker than they should be. Bad things are more inclined to happen, and outcomes or actions might not be of the quality one can normally expect.

Moonbright

A Moonbright, when the moon is extra large in the sky, is a time when StarClan’s eyes are on the forest. It indicates that the eyes of StarClan are turned and paying attention. The Moonbright suggests that things are going well, but care must be taken not to deviate from the proper path. If a Moonbright coincides with any other omen moon it simply intensifies the meaning of that moon.

Falling Star

At Most Times

When a star falls it indicates that a spirit from StarClan has opted to come to earth for a reason known only to them.

In Groups (A Starfall)

When stars fall in groups, called a Starfall, it normally indicates a time of calm before some momentous event that has drawn the attention of so many StarClanners.

During a Birth

A falling star is considered bad luck during a birth. Too much attention from StarClan on one so young does not bode well for their ability to simply enjoy their kithood. The more stars that fall the more intense this sense of unease at the attention of StarClan would be felt.

Moondark

Durring a Gathering

A Moondark, when the moon is blotted out in darkness, during a gathering is a very negative omen. Similar to clouds covering the moon during a gathering a Moondark indicates that StarClan is displeased with some element of the ongoing meeting and wishes to draw the most intensive attention they can to the matter. It is the ultimate way in which StarClan separates themselves from the happenings at a gathering.

At Other Times

Moondarks sometimes happen at times other than gatherings. These cases of the moon being blotted out by darkness indicate that things going on in the earthy realm are not what StarClan wishes of the cats they oversee. A Moondark is difficult to interpret because it might indicate a problem with a single cat in all the clans, or an entire clan. In accordance a Moondark forces all to carefully consider what they are doing and what others are doing.

Sundark

Sundarks happen when the sun is blotted out in darkness for a short time. A Sundark is considered an omen of ill and should be responded to with caution and care. While it may not indicate anything about StarClan’s mood, it definitely indicates what is to come and that the future must be watched with wariness.

Tigermoon

During a Gathering

A Tigermoon, when the moon is colored orange, is known to be a time of StarClan’s favor. Negotiations between Clans during a Tigermoon are especially auspicious.

Birthing a Litter

A litter born under the orange Tigermoon can be expected to be especially healthy and large. Tigermoon litters are known for having a high number of kits and few stillbirths.

At Other Times

A Tigermoon at other times indicates that prey can be expected to run richly and be easier to catch in the orange moonlight.

Intermediate Herbs

Medicine Cats depend on their knowledge of herbs and the properties they have. The following lists are intended as tools of rote memorization for a Medicine Cat in his or her intermediate training phase. Mastery of these lists will expand the knowledge base of a medicine cat and ensure that they are well prepared for advanced situations.

OOC NOTE: As new herbs come into the database the various mixtures might be altered to reflect that. IC you simply ignore discrepancies that pop up as new herbs are added as it should be assumed that new information has been here all along.

Mating

There is no set “time” for mating, which is to say there is no season or period where it must take place. A mating can take place at any time. The only two major requirements are that the mating itself take place off-cam (or be glossed over in an accepted canon story, such as McFlurry Mishap). The other is that any mating that will result in kittens (as it should if you are reading this) will need to have either the relationship or the mating itself approved beforehand by the admins. It should be noted that mating without any previous relationship will hardly ever be approved. See the Litter Applications and CoSC Official Stances on Mature Themes for further rules & information in this area.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy in domestic cats (felis catus, not the CoSC definition of “domestic”, or “kittypets” by Clan cats) lasts about nine weeks, with case-to-case fluctuations. On average, a future queen will usually discover her pregnancy at about four to five weeks, when side effects usually start turning up and the she-cat sees the medicine cat about them. She-cats who are exceptionally attentive to their bodies as well as the symptoms of pregnancy may discover it as early as 2-3 weeks, however, this is highly unlikely and pushing the boundaries of believability. Inversely, if a cat is unfamiliar with the symptoms and is unable to contact a cat who is, they may not discover their pregnancy until 6 weeks or later. Common symptoms of pregnancy that a she-cat may go to a medicine cat for include an unusual increase in appetite, a decrease in energy, and stomach discomfort (See the Pregnancy Complaint Entry for a full list of symptoms).

Maternal Leave

A Clan she-cat who discovers she is pregnant does not immediately retire to the nursery to wait out the days until the kits are born. Doing so would cost her Clan not only the prey she can still catch them, it would cause her to become an unnecessary drain on the Clan’s resources. While she should take care not to injure, stress or strain herself, the future queen need not retire to the nursery until the kitting is expected at any time or physical strain or stress might endanger the lives of any kits she is carrying, barring any unusual circumstances.A queen will typically go onto light duty at around 6 weeks, when the pregnancy is becoming easily visible to all Clanmates. This continues until around a week or so before the kitting is expected (8 weeks), barring any discrepancies or extraneous circumstances. Going into labor early, for example, would warrant a she-cat to be immediately moved to the nursery. When the kit(s) are weaned (at about 3-4 weeks old), then the queen will often return to light duty to help with hunting and begin to regain any conditioning and fitness she has lost. Trips will be more and more extended as the kit(s) grow older and more self-reliant, and upon their graduation, the she-cat should return immediately to full duty.

Unplanned Pregnancies

No matter how much a queen may not wish to bear a litter, a medicine cat will very seldom force a miscarriage with the use of herbs. All kits, whether unexpected, unwanted, or both, have the potential to grow up to be productive members of the Clan. A medicine cat will need a very good reason to even consider killing that potential. A queen would also likely be scolded even in that case, as mating in the Clan cats’ world is almost a sure bet for kittens. (See the Pregnancy (Unwanted) Complaint Entry for a full list of symptoms and treatments)

Axioms: Wisdom of the Past

Sometimes the most important lessons come from the words of the past. The following are taught by Medicine Cats and each is attributed to a cat of the past and considered a valuable piece of knowledge that supersedes clan affiliation. Most are ancient and have been passed down from the days of the splitting. Some from before then.

Substitution

Substitution is the Medicine Cat’s greatest tool. Never just memorize a mixture, instead make sure that you know what each part does. This way if you have a shortage or a cat who isn’t experience a symptom something treats you can alter the mix so that it will better treat that individual case of whatever the illness is.

Quickstep of ShadowClan

Coughs

cough is never just a cough. What’s best for one cough is not necessarily the best for another cough. Diagnose the type of cough carefully and treat just as carefully. But don’t spend so much time on the diagnosis that the one cough becomes another. Treat the problem quickly and accurately.

Treeclimber of RiverClan

Untreated, Green-leaf’s cough becomes Leaf-bare’s death.

Reoc of TigerClan

Details

Not all plants are drastically different from each other. Some are practically identical, but with much different properties. Remember to look for the details to tell which plant is which. It could save a life.
