PSA #24 – Frozen Characters

  • Written by Kitsufox & Rin on 28 March 2022

Announcement

What is a Frozen Character

A Frozen Character is a character in special management by the staff. It will have a yellow marker at the top of the character sheet page indicating that the game administrators have opted to freeze the character.

Why was a character frozen

Characters can be frozen for many reasons, but the biggest one is that the staff is working with the player of the character on some issue. It might mean a player is currently unable to participate but is in contact with game staff, or that game staff has identified an item of concern that requires intervention of some kind. The reasons behind any frozen character are considered confidential by the staff, and only limited information on the situation will be released.

What happens to frozen characters

The final results of freezing a character will vary depending on the situation that caused the freezing in the first place. Ultimately, game staff will make a decision about the character and player involved and that decision will be carried out. This means the character may ultimately be unfrozen and returned to the player, or placed up for adoption by the game staff. Each frozen character will be dealt with on a case by case basis on a timeline that will vary depending on what the situation calls for. Players with frozen characters will be worked with as much as possible to resolve whatever concerns are present.

PSA #23 – Adopting Characters You Formerly Owned Following Confiscation or Surrender

For some time this has been a one answer question but a series of recent events has triggered a revisit of this old and overly simple standard.

If you are attempting to adopt a character that was formerly yours and was confiscated or otherwise surrendered for any reason that offer will be reviewed by the Administration Team. If the administration team feels the situations warrants a recovery1 then the Administration Team will write up a proposal of acceptance in which the staff will be given the power to veto the choice made by the staff.

Declines do not require validation by the Staff. The default answer to “can I adopt back my own characters” should remain “No” unless there is a good reason to consider things otherwise (character has maintained a long period [4+ Months] on the adoption lists, player retired from the game for health or other personal reasons and fully reported their intention to leave to the staff, player has an acceptable reason such as sudden and unavoidable health or personal issues that led to the missing of both the activity check and recovery period, ect (Forgetting to file an LOA prior to needing one for a visitor or vacation do not qualify).

  1. This review by the administration team, who handles player resignations, confiscations, and have full knowledge of all details that were not publicly visible, or visible to staff members. This might include things like PMs, IP records, or the like that are not generally aired when players leave, ect.

PSA #22 – Rules Clarification for Things Permitted by RP Only

Due to the expansive nature of the bans list I’d like to clarify which type of bans are bypassed in what way.

  • Name Bans – Cannot be bypassed in any circumstances without express permission from Kitsufox, even for IC Situations. If a ban changes and a character has that name they are considered to be “Grandfathered In”, but should their name change (even from kit to apprentice) they are required to drop the banned item if they do not have express permission from Kitsufox.
  • Bans against new character in a Clan – Do not apply to litters born ICly.
  • Bans on physical appearance – are ignored when a kitten is rolled, but a player may not request an alteration prior to birth that moves that character into a banned item they were not originally created with.
  • Age Bans – Are only ignored when IC litters are created.
  • Ban against non-clan cats becoming Clan members – Apply only to histories, but any time a non-clan cat is admitted to a clan it must be approved by the Moderator of the area, and by the Administration.
  • Ban against part non-clan clan cats – Is only ignored by special plot based permission, as they are only creatable through IC litters, and those litters must go through the approvals processes.

Questions or a request for an additional clarification? Just post a comment.

PSA #20 – The Cats World is NOT Equal Opportunity

Because of the harsh nature of the lives clan cats live they have been forced to adopt a harsh approach to disability. Because of that I have resurrected an essay I wrote for CoSC on 26 August 2006. I have taken the time to update it and ensure that everything is up to date with the current CoSC approach and modern examples from our In Character world and added some notes on Medicine Cats with disabilities. If you have suggestions and ideas for ways to improve or clarify this essay, please drop Kitsufox a PM and let her know about your idea.

FACT: The cats world is not equal opportunity.

A disability makes you a liability.

I’m sure that those of you unfamiliar with the CoSC approch to the Warriors World are going “Brightheart came out of the Elder’s Den and regained her Warriors Status despite a Disability!”. While on the surface that event might be taken to support the idea that disabilities are something a cat can compensate for if you look deeper you see that Brightheart is a poor example of a ‘Disabled’ cat. A series of questions must be asked in regards to Brightheart’s situation.

  • What was Brightheart’s disability?: Half-blindness.
  • What challenges does this disability create?: Decreased visual radius and loss of depth perception.
  • How were these challenges overcome?: Decreased visual range remains a limitation. Depth perception challenges were overcome through diligent practice and re-training.
  • How did the Leader’s Personality effect the situation?: Firestar is historically a very soft cat who is has a history of putting the desires of one cat above the good of the clan.

When we look at this list of facts we are then able to draw a number of conclusions. The first thing to consider is the severity of the disability. Half-blindness is not something that should be considered a particularly debilitating condition. On the whole an animal with the conviction to re-learn the way her reach looks and ensuring that a buddy can stand on the blindside to limit the liability that causes. While definitely something that makes a cat less useful on border patrols (as they can’t watch all sides) their hunting ability would only be slightly effected after retraining.

With our dismissal of Brightheart as a suitable cat to use for an example in this discussion completed, the time has come to return to the phrase “A disability makes you a liability”. It’s the sort of phrase that is, by human standards, extremely insensitive. However, when the world our characters live in is taken into account the truth of the statement in context becomes apparent. We’ll start with the basic physical capabilities that a warrior must possess.

  1. Moving (for Running, Jumping & Stalking)
  2. Seeing (for Spotting, Tracking, & Watching)
  3. Hearing (for Listening, Learning, & Tracking)
  4. Speaking (for Alerting, Reporting & Interacting)

As a general rule a character who cannot perform all of these basics to at least 70% capability on be actively considering the effect their inability will have on the cats on patrol with them. The next phase is to individual consider the dangers of each of the item on the above list.

Moving

Movement is involved in both hunting and fighting. The activities of hunting and fighting are all consuming for a warrior. A cat who cannot move well is a poor hunter and fighter. They would even be a danger to the rest of their patrol when their retreat was slowed by their condition.

Movement impaired Warriors are a huge liability.

Movement impaired Medicine Cats are less of a liability, but the dangers of slow arrival to critical patients should be considered.

Seeing

Sight is an essential part of survival in wild places and in clan life. A visually impaired cat lacks the ability to accurately see and pursue prey. They lack the ability to see the enemy move in a fight. They would even need assistance to keep track of kits in the nursery.

Visually impaired Warriors have no place amongst fit and fighting cats. They cannot fulfill the basic requirements of being a Warrior.

Visually impaired Medicine Cats lack the ability to assess wounds, symptoms, or herb quality. They’re very dangerous.

Hearing

Hearing is an essential element of communication. In accordance cats without the ability to hear lack the ability to be communicated with effectively. They are unable to receive warnings, instructions, and teachings from other cats. They are unable to track prey or enemy through sound.

Hearing impaired Warriors cannot be effective warriors due to inability to receive orders, warnings, or lessons.

Hearing impaired Medicine Cats cannot be effective due to their inability to receive oral lessons or information from patients.

Speaking

Normally related to deafness (due to the cat not learning to communicate verbally), though sometimes originating from an injury to the voice box, mute cats are unable to provide reports, warnings or lessons to other cats. They cannot speak and thus cannot interact well with other cats.

Mute Warriors are ineffective warriors due to the inability to make reports or warn others in the patrol of enemies.

Mute Medicine Cats are ineffective due to their inability to give instructions to patients or lessons to their apprentices.

Returning to the case we sighted at the beginning of this essay, we need to think a bit more of Brightheart and how she factors in to what has been discussed now. While suffering a physical challenge, it is hard to call her truly disabled. She’s still capable of seeing out of her remaining eye, and the difficulties presented by the damaged one are limited and (at least one of the two major symptoms) is something that can be overcome through training.

When the warriors world is considered one has to remember that the good of a single cat can never be placed before the good of an entire clan (though individual leaders will have to take each case into consideration on an IC basis, and make choices based on what that individual cat considers ‘the good of the clan’). This means that making one cat happy by letting them stay a warrior is less desirable than putting them in the Elder’s den where they cannot endanger the lives of their comrades.

It should be remembered, however, that being an elder or being in possession of a disability does not make a cat useless to their clan here at CoSC. To end the article I’ll present a list of IC cats with disabilities here.

  • List to be added.

PSA #19 – Feral, Semi-feral, & Domestic Ranks

As of a few minuets ago I realized that the old announcement explaining the Feral, Semi-feral and Domestic Ranks wasn’t actively recorded anywhere on this website. Which is not a good thing. Think PSA’s purpose is to correct that oversight.

DOMESTIC: This Clanless rank is in place to represent those cats who are expressly pets to humans they generally refer to as ‘Housefolk’. These cats do not hunt for their own food or attend to arranging their own protection from the elements. These cats live directly with humans as pets.

SEMI-FERAL: This Clanless rank is in place to represent those cats who are not afraid of or fully separated from humans, but do not consider themselves attached to humans in any way. These cats usually arrange for their own feeding and protection from the elements, but are not above taking human handouts. These cats typically live on their own in human settlements.

FERAL: This Clanless rank is in place to represent those cats who are fully separated from humans, and generally go out of their way to avoid contact with them. These cats arrange for their own feeding and protection from the elements, and are above taking human handouts in all but the most desperate circumstances. These cats typically live well away from human settlements.

PSA #17 – Character Traits

Character traits is a catch all word I’ve applied to such things as the Fierceblooded trait that afflicted a bloodline of the Children Era ThunderClan. In an effort to clarify the requirements for a trait, which can belong to one of two types, to be established and help other lines to identify what might already be bloodline character traits.

What is a Character Trait?

Objective Traits

An Objective Character Trait is a verifiable trait that is notable and has the potential to significantly effect all characters who fulfill the requirements of it but is not tied to a line or a specific sub-group of cats within a regional game population (IE: Clan Cats, Cats of Camelot, Ect).

Subjective Traits

A Subjective Character trait is a significant personality or physical trait that is significantly present in a bloodline over multiple generations, and significantly unique to that line.

How to get a Trait Recognized

Objective Traits

To get an Objective Character Trait recognize you must put forth a basic description of the trait and what that requirements a character must possess to qualify for that trait. You must submit the following Documentation to Kitsufox. If you wish to display the information on the website, you may do so via a subpage of your own userpage.

Required Documentation

  • Description of Trait (Including specific requirements to qualify)
  • List of at least 10 characters that exhibit this trait (should it be a smaller group and a very significant trait this requirement can be waived at Admin discretion)

Subjective Traits

To get a subjective trait recognized you must put forth the effort of writing a basic description of the trait, and submitting that in addition to the following documentation to Kitsufox. If you wish to display the information here on the website, you may do so via a subpage of your own userpage.

Required Documentation

  • Description of trait.
  • List of all cats you feel exhibit this trait.
  • Proof that the trait is present over multiple generations of the family tree. To count, the characters must all be registered on the site and approved.
  • Proof that the trait is significantly absent from the rest of the regional population of the game (IE: For Clan cats, amongst all the clans, for Non-clan cats, for all Non-clanners, etc).
  • Explanation of why you feel this trait is one that should be isolated to the line, by way of why you feel it will remain absent in the general population over an extended period of time.

The Process of Being Recognized

Objective Traits

Objective Traits are recognized by the Staff when they feel the addition of the trait would identify a significant group within the game population whose identification is valuable to the game.

In most cases the potential trait will be discussed in the game related chatter forum by the game population at large.

If a trait proposal is declined, an explanation of that choice will be made. The player making the proposal is free to re-propose the trait later, should the situation change significantly enough to make review worthwhile.

Subjective Traits

Subjective traits are recognized by the Admin Team when they feel the addition of that trait would benefit the game and aid in helping define a clan or group further.

In many cases, the Admin Team will devote a conference room to additional questions and discussion about it prior to them privately discussing and deciding how they wish to rule on this case.

If a trait proposal is declined, an explanation of that choice will be made. The player making the proposal is free to re-propose the trait later, should the situation change significantly enough to make review worthwhile.

PSA #15 – Application Bypass

Because it’s been done a few times, and because I want to clarify how it works, it should be noted that it is fully possible for PCs to be promoted in sensible ways without using an application process.

This is done at the discretion of the staff, and only where Player Characters are concerned.

PSA #14 – Short Descriptions

This announcement was originally made on Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:13 pm on the Original CoSC site. It was updated on 4 August 2008 to fit the rules as they’ll stand on this version of the website but received a second, more complete overhaul on 20 July 2009 to document more clearly a number of related subjects. on 4 October 2019 it was updated again to reflect the details of the newest website.

What is a Short Description?

A short description is a brief sentence designed to sum up a character’s appearance completely (occasionally important and/or widely known personality elements are included). They are assigned by an Administrator (never by the player creating the character) based on the originally approved appearance for the character.

Why do we have Short Descriptions?

Short descriptions were originally added to CoSC because a player asked Kitsufox if they could make their brown mackerel tabby into a gray spotted tabby when it matured. The Sdesc system was created to create a non-editable version that boils down the essence of a character and permanently records it so that players less scrupulous than the one who asked would be thwarted with a permanent record.

How do Short Descriptions Work?

Within about 24 hours of the approval of your character a member of the Approvals Team will add a short description to your character sheet. This description then stays with your character for the rest of it’s life. Only members of the admin team can see this field when editing a character.

How do I get my Short Description Updated?

Short descriptions can be updated by request.

To make that request visit the Applications Questions Forum and and write out a polite request to have it changed that includes what you would like it changed to and an team member will review your request.

Rules for Requests

  • The Apps Team will accept only requests that are deemed reasonable changes.
  • Randomly appearing scars without Role Play or a Canon Accepted Story to back them up will never be accepted.
  • Additions of significant markings will only be accepted on characters under 12 moons of age who have not had pixels made via the Character Imagery Project (Imagery project has not been re-developed as of 4 October 2019, but is intended to be returned as soon as possible).

PSA #11 – Power Playing

This PSA was made by Gorse at the old website on Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:38 pm.

Announcement

Forward

To all members, please do not feel completely singled out by this PSA. True, it was partially done because there have been some minor issues lately, but also because I had enough free time and initiative to work on this. It also makes a good article for the Roleplaying section of The Warriors Encyclopedia. ^^;

Intro

Powerplaying is one of the first and most important rules in play-by-post roleplaying. And it’s very simply defined too. Powerplaying is controlling one or more person’s characters without any consent beforehand. However, this definition of powerplaying is very broad, and the specifics can be hard to understand. So what exactly constitutes a powerplay? This PSA is clarification.

Basic Powerplaying

This type of powerplaying is simple, as it is defined by the definition itself. It is also one of the most common, and the most easily spotted. In an in-character post, the powerplayer controls another person’s character without their consent and permission.

Example

Note: In my samples, I will use two characters. Smallspot will be played by “me,” while Hugestripe will be played by the “other roleplayer.” Also note that the powerplaying will be bolded

My post: Smallspot awoke to early morning sunlight. It was nice and warm in her nest, making her reluctant to leave. Still, it was best to get up, now that she was awake. She got up, stretched luxuriously, and padded out of the warriors’ den.

Their post: Hugestripe was already outside, biting into a nice plump thrush. “How are you this morning, Smallspot?” he asked, eying the she-cat as she padded out of the den.

My post: Smallspot purred. “Very good, thank you.” She glanced toward the fresh-kill pile. “Hey, after you’re done eating, would you like to go hunting with me? We need to fill up the fresh-kill pile.”“Sure,” Hugestripe said, nodding.

How is this powerplaying?

In the example situation, I have no right to control what Hugestripe says. He is not my character, therefore, without express permission stated in the post in question, I cannot control what he says or does. Even if Hugestripe would have accepted if left to the other roleplayer, this is still considered unacceptable in roleplaying situations. Hugestripe may have refused if left to the character’s roleplayer. He could have shrugged off the question and ignored her. He could have even chucked the mouse in her face, jumped up, and yowled a sudden vow of allegiance to another Clan. That is why basic powerplays are not permitted in Rps.

Godmoding-type Powerplay (also called Metaplaying)

In this type of powerplaying, your character has the godlike ability to automatically “know” things about other characters in-characterly without being told. For instance, being able to read another character’s mind. The powerplaying character may also instantly know all about a conversation another cat had in secret, that the powerplaying cat was not a part of, nor was told about. Circumstances like this cause some overlap between powerplaying and Metaplaying , another roleplaying taboo. In Metaplaying, the metaplayer uses information they learned in OOC circumstances (across a PM or IM chat, for example), in-characterly to their advantage. However, it’s probably fair to say that not all godmoding-type powerplays are Metaplaying, just as not all Metaplaying is Godmoding-type powerplay.

Example:

Their post: Hugestripe bumped into the she-cat Smallspot just as he was leaving on patrol. “Nice to see you, Smallspot,” he mewed courtieously, although internally he growled, Is it just me, or do you look ugly today?

My post: Smallspot whirled around indignantly. “I am not ugly!” she snapped, glaring at the retreating back of Hugestripe. The nerve of that tom!

How is this powerplaying?

Hugestripe did not say the words aloud. Plain and simple. By making her react as if she heard, Smallspot’s roleplayer (me) implied that Hugestripe did say the words around. Either that, or Smallspot could read minds. Getting a character with supernatural powers such as mind-reading is another matter entirely.

Pre-interpretation Powerplaying

One of the less-noticed (and less-corrected) forms of powerplaying is one known as pre-interpretation Powerplaying. It is also more likely to be seen on character sheets and profiles rather than in actual in-character roleplays, although the latter is not impossible to find. The powerplayer interprets how other characters see their character.

Example from a Character Sheet:

Smallspot is a ginger tortoiseshell she-cat with green eyes. Her tail is extra long and curvy, and her legs are long too. She is very good at several tasks warriors do, especially hunting. Cats of her Clan believe Smallspot is the greatest hunter in all of the forest. She is also very good at running.

How is this powerplaying?

No member of the Clan yet has agreed to such a thing. The powerplayer is automatically assuming the reactions of all their character’s Clanmates. For all the powerplayer knows, the other characters may think she was the worst hunter in the forest.

Example from an In-Character Roleplay:

Smallspot woke up that morning in a bad mood. As she stormed out of the den, any cat who would have seen her thought that she was a good cat to avoid right then. She stomped over to the fresh-kill pile, took a vole out of it, and tore into the prey furiously.

How is this powerplaying?

Again, the cats who may be in the area at the time have not agreed to thinking as such. The powerplayer is interpreting how her character is seen by other characters. Note: Providing an extra amount of detail is not pre-interpretation powerplaying. As long as the character does not directly state how another cat/cats feel or think about them, it does not qualify.

Twinking

Twinking is, simply defined, unapproved actions against another person’s character. In Warriors Roleplays, twinking is most often seen in battle, when a character deals an injury to another without the other cat’s player’s consent.

Example:

Smallspot pounced on Hugestripe’s back and bit into his neck hard.

How is this powerplaying?

The powerplayer did not give Hugestripe’s player a chance to have their character dodge. The powerplayer simply had Smallspot leap onto Hugestripe’s back and do a large amount of damage without permission.

Hindsight Powerplaying

One of, if not THE most complex method of powerplaying, but a method all the same. This kind of method is often avoided by roleplayers who simply not roleplay after a certain event until the event has happened (which is why you often see that certain players on here don’t post after the Gathering until the events of the Gathering are known.)

In Hindsight Powerplaying, the powerplayer roleplays about events that have not happened yet on camera, in a time frame that is in the aftermath of said event (such as Rping about things that happened after a Gathering as a result of things that happened at the Gathering, except the Gathering has not been roleplayed out yet).

Example:

Smallspot is in a patrol that just ran into a badger on-camera. The badger’s appearing is the most recent post that’s been made on the patrol thread. Meanwhile, Smallspot begins roleplaying in a thread that takes place just after the patrol

My post:

Smallspot winced as the wound in her shoulder twinged. She had gotten it from the badger she had driven out earlier that day while on patrol.

How is this powerplaying?

The powerplayer has no idea what the badger will do. It may see the cats on the patrol, realize it’s outnumbered, and run. It may not attack Smallspot at all. The powerplayer also had no idea what the other members of the patrol will do, and certainly has no garuntee that Smallspot was the one to drive off the badger, being injured in the process. The events are not set in stone until they have been roleplayed out on camera. The powerplayer is trying to dictate what will happen in the thread that is not done yet, which is why this is defined as powerplay.

Inclusion Powerplay

A type of powerplay that is only really found on character sheets/profiles. In this type of powerplay, another real character is included in the powerplayer’s character’s sheet without the permission of the character’s player.

Example:

Spottedkit was born to two loving parents, Starshine and Moonglow. She was apprenticed at the normal time of six moons. Once she was an apprentice, she met another cat named Hugepaw. She and Hugepaw were friends throughout their apprenticeships, and became warriors together.

How is this powerplay?

Hugestripe’s player did not give Smallspot’s player permission to use their character in Smallspot’s history. This kind of involvement would have a huge effect on Hugestripe’s roleplay, particularly around Smallspot. Without permission, trying to create such a huge effect is unacceptable.
