Is the Place of No Stars a part of the CoSC Canon?

CoSC does not acknowledge the PoNS as a part of game canon, despite its being introduced as a part of the true world canon. This is because we feel, in an effort to stay truer to the more visceral original series, an all encompassing “Afterlife” is more suitable than a “Heaven/Hell” facsimile.

The StarClan of CoSC is a place where the cats of “good” and “evil” run together. Since the cats of the “good” sort outweigh those of the “evil” sort the good cats are able to (in most cases) keep those of a darker nature in check. But, this setup does open up many interesting possibilities for StarClan, including giving the afterlife of our clan cats an active political life as different cats vie for power and look to head up the merged four-part clan of the afterlife.

The only way that a cat of Clan descent might end up a part of another sky than the one StarClan controls is if StarClan themselves refuses to accept them. Such a thing is rarely done, however, because it eliminates the possibility that StarClan might influence and control the cat in question.

What parts of ‘Secrets of the Clans’ does this game consider Canon?

Due to the fact that this game was founded well before the 2007 release of Secrets of the Clans (SotC) in 2005 we had already established a good many things that would have contradicted directly with this new book. It was concluded by the game ownership that the game would be best served by preserving our custom content and deep attachment to the fiercer and more visceral world of the original series.

For more exacting details on what parts of SotC that we do and don’t consider cannon, please Consult this Page.

Why don’t you have/follow any of the herb lists or attack lists and things in Secrets of the Clans?

The first reason is that it would be plagiarism to simply copy the text of the books, unreasonable to expect every member of the game to own a copy of the book, and we provide far more detail with our custom game information.

What do the size ranges mean

The size ranges are as follows, and represent a full grown animal in their physical prime:

  • Very Small: 4 pounds & under
  • Small: 4 – 6 Pounds
  • Medium-small: 7 – 9 Pounds
  • Medium: 10 – 12 Pounds
  • Medium-large: 12 – 14 Pounds
  • Large: 15 – 17 Pounds
  • Very Large: 18 Pounds & greater

The following things should be noted:

  • Very few domestic cats will ever be lower than Medium-small in size.
  • Clan Cats rarely exceed 15 pounds.

How much food should a clan cat consume in a day?

The fact that no-one seems to share the same mental vision on this subject has resulted in me (Kitsufox) deciding to do some research on it. Theoretically a cat eating a raw diet should consume 2 – 4 percent of its ideal body weight each day. For a clan cat adults would range (in the Medium-small to Medium size range, AKA “Average”) from about 5 to 10 pounds (2.3 – 4.5 kilograms). There you have the numbers I used to reach the following conclusion:

An average clan cat would eat between 3 – 6 ounces (85 – 170 grams) of food per day.

This means the following for an average (medium sized) cat or group of cats:

  • Mouse will feed 1/3rd of a cat.
  • An average Squirrel would feed about 4 cats.
  • A small rabbit Rabbit would feed 7 cats.

On the Subject of Patrols and Patrolling

Question not answered on this page? Scroll to the bottom and ask it in the comments!

What is a patrol?

A patrol is a small group of warrior and/or apprentice ranked cats (typically 3-5) assigned to undertake a specific task. Patrols have an assigned leader (typically a senior warrior) and are generally no more than a third comprised of apprentices.

Patrols are organized daily by the Clan Deputy who will include details of who is assigned to the patrol, where the patrol is supposed to go, and who is supposed to be in charge of that patrol.

What are the types of patrol?

  • Hunting: A standard type of patrol in which the cats are charged with collecting food to feed the non-hunting members of the clan, or those assigned to other tasks and unable to hunt for themselves that day. It should be noted that a cat heading out alone and of their own accord is not on a ‘hunting patrol’, but simply out hunting.
  • Border: A standard type of patrol in which the cats are charged with checking the clan’s borders to ensure no trespassing has happened and the border scent markings are strong and well maintained.
  • Security: A non-standard type of patrol in which the cats are charged with ensuring a certain area (most typically the camp, but might include a section of border that’s been frequently breached) is kept safe against intruders.

Who organizes the patrols?

It is the duty of the Clan deputy to organize the Clan’s standard patrols (dawn, sunhigh, dusk, etc). For whatever reason, however, the job may be given to another cat. The deputy picks which cats will go on what patrols and at what time.

Casual hunting patrols (for example, spur-of-the-moment hunting pairs) can be organized by warriors on their own, without the permission of the deputy (though the warriors ought to let someone know what they’re doing).

What happens if a patrol gets attacked?

Patrols, just like everything else, are subject to ICA=ICC.

If a patrol is attacked, the cats of the patrol will need to decide their actions and then accept whatever consequences that may come from those actions. For information ICA=ICC, consent, and permission, see here.

Situations in which border conflicts or attacks happen between clan cats, the attack should be arranged OOC’ly ahead of time. The same goes for situations in which non-clan cats have violent encounters with clan cats.

In situations in which a patrol would like to encounter a predator, they should seek out first the permissions they need to have that predator appear in the game, and then arrange for a player to take on the role of that non-player character (no character sheet would be needed, unless the predator is a part of a plot).

What happens if a patrol leaves the Clan’s territory or enters the territory of another Clan?

Generally, no patrol, unless under specific order or due to necessity, should leave the Clan’s territory or enter into the territory of another Clan. If a patrol does leave its Clan’s territory or enters the territory of another Clan, the patrol should be prepared for what may happen to it.

As stated above, ICA=ICC, and cats will be especially at risk if they enter into a rival Clan’s land.

How come my cat isn’t being picked for a patrol?

It could be a number of reasons. It all depends on your cat. Your cat may be sick, or injured, or on punishment, etc… There may be a better pick for a certain patrol, your cat may not get along with the others on the patrol, your cat may just not be suited for the type of patrol being organized, or the deputy just might not like your cat.

No one ever said that life was fair. In fact, we here at CoSC constantly remind you that it’s not.

Finally, there is also the possibility that the player is simply not active enough. If the player is active, their cat should have little reason to be skipped over in patrol organization, assuming they’re in good shape and standing with their Clan, etc.

What limitations do apprentices have in regards to patrols?

Apprentices lack training, and that serves to greatly limit them in regards to being assigned to a patrol (and it should be noted that they are not included on a patrol with their mentor, but only by inclusion by the cat organizing the patrol).

Most apprentices will not be included in patrols at all until they complete the Beginning Level of training.

  • Apprentices are not generally included in border or security patrols until they have completed the Intermediate Level Battle Training
  • Cats in the Advanced Level of Training should be expected to be perfecting skills and not require more than very advanced training and practice. This means that cats in the advanced training should be relatively competent cats for patrol work.

How much ground does a patrol cover in an outing?

A hunting patrol is generally assigned an area to hunt. This is so that the same areas aren’t continually hunted and drained completely of prey. Deputies much consider such things and serve as maintainers of the forest, ensuring that the hunting pressure on any one location isn’t so much that it will damage the prey supply.

Border patrols can, in the matter of a approximately 2 hours, cover the entire border of the clan. In times in which there are not concerns the patrols at the various times of day will patrol the entire border and report back on what they find. However, additional patrols might be sent out to check specific areas if threats have been noted. Instances include things like watching the movements of an identified predator in clan territory or additional checks being made of a spot in which a recent incursions by enemy forces has occurred.

What is an Original PC Group?

An original PC group is a group that exists here on CoSC but does not appear in the Warriors Book Series by Erin Hunter.

I want to start a PC group, how do I go about it?

There are several ways in which an Original PC Group can be created. In general it is recommended that you first reach out to Kitsufox with your group concept and she can help you figure out which method will work the best for your group.

  • Permanent Group In Character Founding: Groups that are founded in character and on camera technically require no approval to get started. You simply need to start recruiting in character. Once you meet the minimum requirements described later in this FAQ you need to get in touch with Kitsufox to get your group documented and into the list of official groups in the game.
  • Permanent Group Off Camera Founding: Some groups can be founded off camera for various uses. In many cases these require large amounts of out of character discussion before the group can appear on camera. The group will go live only when Kitsufox grants it approval.
  • Temporary Groups: Sometimes you need a temporary group for a plot. These are worked out in OOC discussion and then taken live for purposes of the plot in question. These groups are either destroyed or go completely off camera at the point when the plot it is related to ends.

What are the minimum requirements for getting my group into the system?

The requirements do vary depending on the type of group in question. Please consult the correct section of the list below for the requirements that apply to you. The presence of a “Creation Channel” (the ability to directly create characters into a group) also effect the requirements. Groups CAN be reclassified at any time if the staff deems it necessary and require members of a group to comply with any consequences of that choice.

  • Permanent Groups
  • Non-Agressive to the Clans Groups – Groups with no intention of destroying the clan cats.
    • Creation Channel
      1. Non-agressive groups are not currently considered eligible for creation channels. If you feel it is necessary to the health of your PC group please appeal to Kitsufox
    • No Creation Channel
      1. 3 committed PCs from a minimum of 3 players.
      2. They will not have a limited lifespan on the group.
  • Semi-Agressive to the Clans Groups – Groups that conflict with the clans but have no immediate plans to destroy the clans at this time.
    • Creation Channel
      1. 5 committed PCs from a minimum of 3 players.
      2. They will not have a limited lifespan on the group.
      3. The creation channel will open after the group has 6 months of activity.
    • No Creation Channel
      1. 3 committed PCs from a minimum of 3 players.
      2. They will not have a limited lifespan on the group.
  • Agressive to the Clans Groups – Groups that are fully committed to the destruction of the clans.
    • Creation Channel
      1. 5 committed PCs from a minimum of 3 players.
      2. The lifespan of the group will be assigned at the time of approval.
    • No Creation Channel
      1. 5 committed PCs from a minimum of 3 players.
      2. The lifespan of the group will be assigned at the time of approval.
      3. The creation channel will open after the group has 1 month of activity.
  • Temporary Groups: Temporary groups have no written-in-stone requirements. The only requirement is that Kitsufox approves the group for the prescribed use and feels that they will be notable enough to warrant game documentation.

Please be aware that every group is required to fully document all information required by game administration at the time of the group receiving an official game roster and formalization. Kitsufox will typically require documents for the traditions, rank structure, teachings, and the like. Other items may be required depending on the individual nature of the group.

On the Subject of MC’S, Visions & Prophecies

Question not answered on this page? Scroll to the bottom and ask it in the comments!

Why is there an entire section of the general rules devoted to telling us we can’t have our cats experience a prophecy if we want to?

This rule was put into place because any act of StarClan that does not serve the main plot, must reflect it. If, let’s say, StarClan is at war with one another and have been in a period of no contact with even the Medicine Cats, would one be able to come down and visit your standard warrior?

Each moment when StarClan visits the forest is a moment that the Administrators, who are the technical players of the gods in the IC World, must be fully aware of. They must be able to control and bend any visitation in the world to main plot. As the main plot always takes precedent over smaller personal plots, things need to be cleared with administrators so that they can be considered during design and execution phases of plots.

There is also the fact that they are (in accordance with the books) supposed to observe rather than interfere with the earthly world. While Medicine Cats and Leaders have close contact regularly with StarClan, normal warriors are, frankly, normal. It is not normal to see dead people cats.

Whom do I talk to about getting a vision/prophecy/visitation approved?

Drop a PM to Kitsufox. She’ll take it into any other Administrators and/or Staff Members who are required and they will discuss the matter and deliver a decision and set up any required RP or Storywriting with you as quickly as possible. Be ready to provide answers to any additional questions the staff might have concerning your idea.

The MC’s talk about visions each moon, but I never see them posted anywhere.

That is because the visions are delivered to the MC’s privately in the Staff Forum.

Eventually, visions relating to past plots will be released to the public for viewing, but the staff is generally cautious if they think elements of the past visions may show up in later plots. Due to this no visions have seen full public release at this time.

How do I become a Medicine Cat?

If all Medicine Cat Positions for the Clans are filled, you must either become the Medicine Cat’s Apprentice with a young character and grow up.

Sometimes Medicine Cat Characters are made adoptable. If one is available, you may apply if you have at least a month of role play history with the game, including consistent presences with your characters in threads.

Information on available ranked characters can be found in the Applications Department, along with access to the forms you’ll need to fill out. Please bear in mind that decisions are made based on a combination of IC and OOC factors, and the application decision making process by the staff can be long.

I want to get my character sick. How do I get started?

The first step is to look in the Complaint Guide, select an illness and how severe an infection you wish to have your character have. The guide provides all sorts of information including how long you’ll be expected to be sick and how long it will take to fully recover.

From there it’s just down to getting any permissions you need.

I want my character to get sick. Whom do I talk to?

This varies depending on the required permission for your illness. None but the most critical illnesses and injuries require permission from the staff. Generally speaking you need only arrange a thread with the MC player.

For more details on situations that require permission, consult the Consent & Permissions FAQ.

The MC gave my character herbs; I should be able to be sick less than 3 days!

Untrue.

I don’t care if you’re talking herbs or modern medicine; it takes more than swallowing those pills and herbs to get well. If your character is mildly ill, RP with a day or two of healing time in there. The sicker your character is, the more healing time you could take.

Use common sense, please.

If you have questions, Kitsufox is more than happy to provide advice.

I don’t want my character to ever get sick if he can’t just automatically get well!

But, no one goes through life without getting sick at least now and then.

It’s good for your character’s level of humanity to get sick every now and then. And it’s not like it’ll keep you from RPing other stuff! A little cold just takes a cat out of the fray for a few days

General

Why are there so few litters in this game?

There are a few reasons for this, but primarily it’s because we require full IC development of a relationship with another PC for a litter to be approved. There’s also the issue of each kit being an investment for a full TWO YEARS in RL before it’s even really eligible to be a warrior with our time-frame. I’d hate to have too many people with a lot of their PCs tied up in kits.

There is also a matter of balance to be maintained. We can’t have 15 warriors and 19 apprentices now, can we? We only approve litters when clans actually need kits to grow into apprentices.

Why can’t we pick what our kits look like?

Because CoSC uses a realistic system of breeding that provides true to life offspring based on actual genetics. When litters are rolled the Admin Team processes the genetic options based on the character’s registered genotypes and one is randomly selected for the kits. For details on litter rolling, see that section of this FAQ.

Why does it seem so hard to get a litter?

Because Kitsu consdiers litters a reward for players who have been with the game for a long time and put the effort into developing the relationship… and players who seem like they’re just out to get a couple of litters of kittens (a very long term player time investment) slapped into the game aren’t likely to get litters. Since kits are special additions to a clan (of which a clan has only a few at once) she feels it’s wrong for normal PCs development as characters to be sidelined for the express purpose of earning a “Plausible” or “Confirmed” relationship rating.

Also, Willow states that if you want to play a kitten, it might be a good idea to look through the adoptable characters. There might be kits up for adoption there. It doesn’t need to be your character’s kit. In fact, it can be much more fun if you play a kit from another litter, since you get more players to interact with.

Who names the kits?

The parents of the litter can name the kits, or they can accept applications before naming and leave the name selection to the kits prospective players.

Who plays the kits?

If the parents have open slots, they may. Or they may give them away privately, or they might offer them up for public adoption via the system. It’s the choice of the players of the parents.

What happens if no player can be found?

Then the kit can either be stillborn, or die shortly after birth. Just depends on when in the process the parents’ players give up on finding one for the kit.

Getting a Litter

How do I get a litter?

The first step is to realize that there is a time investment involved in getting a litter approved. It’s best to just let matters happen and if you have a relationship that hits a point of it becoming a real consideration, THEN beginning the process of getting it tracked and ready to yield kits. Once a litter is warranted, and there is room in the clan for kits, then you might EARN a litter.

How do I earn a litter?

Contribute interesting RP to the game as a whole, in addition to contributing a well developed inter-character relationship to the game. And have good timing (has to be room in the clan to accomodate the kits).

What’s this about having a relationship tracked?

This is done on the [Tracking] thread in the Family Affairs Forum. Players set forth relationships and they get rated. Ratings indicate the level a relationship is at. Prior to the point of Plausible, there is honestly no reason why a relationship even really should be tracked. Until a relationship is solidly developed they’re still subject to sudden and unexpected change as a result of Role Play.

How do you judge if a relationship is “well established” or not?

This is a difficult thing to quantify, but I will do my best. When I look at a tracking application I’m looking for two things:

  1. An existing relationship of some sort between the characters that demonstrates the way they relate to each other.
  2. A demonstration of commitment to playing the involved characters on the part of the players.

There is a great deal of subjectiveness involved. I don’t look for a specific number of threads, or a specific number of months/moons involved. I prefer 2+ moons of interactions between the characters, spread over 3+ threads per moon, but those are suggestions, not laws. And they don’t have to be planned out, exclusive “relationship building” threads. I prefer they’re more natural threads that just demonstrate the characters relationship, not the players choice to stuff them into a mating.

Type? I thought relationships had to be well established… Why is Friendly an option?

Actually, I never said that it had to be a romantic relationship, just a well developed one. Why couldn’t a she-cat who desired kits ask a friend to sire a litter? The books clearly support the idea that non-romantic matings not only happen but are acceptable (why else would the option not to declare the father be within a Queen’s rights?)

So, I’ve had it tracked, it’s Confirmed. How do I actually get this litter?

Proceed over to the Litters Approval Department, where full instructions on the application process are detailed.

Litter Rolling

What do you mean by ‘Litter Rolling’?

The following traits are randomized by the Administration to imitate the variability of life. The traits rolled in the litter: Number of Kits, Gender, Stillbirth Possibility, Genotype/Pheonotype, and birth Defect Chance.

How is Number of Kits Rolled?

The number of kits is rolled from 1 of 3 lists.

  • Cats in poor condition or in possession of Poor Fertility will have between 1 and 2 kits
  • All other non-domestic/semi-feral cats will be between 1 and 4
  • Domestic cats or Semi-ferals in good condition will have between 1 and 6.

How are kitten genders rolled?

Then the genders of the kits are selected randomly based on straight 50-50 odds.

How is Stillbirth Possibility rolled?

From there the system decides if any of the kits are stillborn (using either 10% or 40% possibility depending on mother’s condition).

How is Genotype/Phenotype Rolled?

The administration compiles a list of possible genotypes for the litter, and then a roll is made to assign one to each kitten. If the kitten is white it is subject to a set of blindness/deafness rolls (60% possibility).

How is Birth Defect Chance Rolled?

The chance of Birth Defects for a kitten is 10%. If a kitten ends up with a birth defect the administration selects a defect that suits the situation of the litter. This defect can be as mild or as severe as the administration feels is fitting.

On the Subject of Consent and Needed Permissions

Question not answered on this page? Scroll to the bottom and ask it in the comments!

Consent is to give assent or approval. It’s what you get when you ask someone if you can include an action of their character in role play or a character sheet.

The Character Rules contain an entry on Consent.

What about this ICA=ICC stuff?

ICA=ICC (In character actions equal in character consequences) is balanced against consent with the idea that even in situations without express consent an administrator or moderator can rule that, by taking a specific action, the player clearly gave consent to the consequences.

If you feel that you need a call on an ICA=ICC Consent issue contact game administration.

Should you feel a leader player has made a poor call, you may appeal to the Administration.

The General Rules contains and entry on ICA=ICC.

We do it becuase it makes everything fair. People actually get to control their own characters without risking something they didn’t know their character did popping up at random. The ICA=ICC stuff is in place to prevent abuses of the consent system, characters who do things that deserve punishments shouldn’t be able to get away unpunished.

What IC Activities do I need Permission for?

  • PATROLS
    • Hunting: Permission is required only if the prey being faced requires permission to appear IC, per the Prey Species Guide.
    • Border: Permission is required only if there is no Senior Warrior involved to lead the patrol, or the patrol is of a non-standard type (IE: checking out a specific disturbance). Non-standard patrols need only the permission of the Leader or Deputy player.
  • PREDATOR ENCOUNTERS
    • All Encounters: Permission is always required for IC appearance per the definitions in the Predator Species Guide.
    • Near Camp: Any encounter near camp, even of a non-approval required species, must have approval of the Leader Player as they will be involved heavily in the aftermath.
  • ILLNESS AND INJURY
    • All Illnesses & Injuries: Permission is required only if the result of the illness will be retirement from Warrior Duties or death. Death or Retirement situations need only be cleared by the administration, and will be refused if there is an imbalance of warriors and elders).
    • Potential Epidemics: Must be cleared by the Area Moderator & a Game Administrator. This means any time a second cat dies of a given illness within the span of 4 in character weeks.

What permissions do I need to set up a plot?

Plot setup is an important part of this game, but depending on the plot you may or may not need permission. Consult the following list to know what’s what.

  • Tiny Plot – No permission needed unless that permission is required for another reason (IE: Special prey, Multiple sire litter, ect)
  • Plot – Permission of involved players and permission of the leader players of effected groups (if any).
  • Group Plot – Permission of all directly affected characters (IE: the “main characters” of the plot) and the permission of the leader players of the group the plot effects.
  • Intergroup Plot – Permission of all directly effected characters (IE: the “main characters” of the plot) and the permission of the leader players of the groups that plot effects, plus clearance from an administrator.
  • World Plot – Consensus and planning by the staff are required. If you wish to propose a world plot write a pitch and private message it to Kitsufox for consideration.

The CoSC Staff understands that sometimes things turn into plots that one didn’t mean to be plots. Breaking the permission rules here is permissible within reason, but you are expected to respect any requests from staff that might require a storyline to be halted due to far-reaching ramifications that you did not see.

Why do I need permission to have a StarClan Cat appear? I’m listed as player of my cat’s parents!

A cat being a member of StarClan deeply complicates the process of them appearing in game. It should also be noted that you (even as the technical player of the StarClan Cat) may be completely unaware of appearance made in association with Medicine Cats visions. In accordance any post made using a deceased character must be approved by the Administration. This permission will include first discussing the reasoning of the appearance and then the exact text of each post to be made.

In many cases of appearance on screen by dead cats a specifically selected member of the Administration team may take over the character’s appearance to ensure game continuity and help speed up role-play reaction time. Most appearances by dead cats will be tied into the ongoing world plot and thus may require knowledge of information that a non-administration simply does not have access to.

This system helps ensure that plot secrets, surprises and other fun adventures don’t get leaked prior to appearance in character.

On the Subject of Character Creation

Question not answered on this page? Scroll to the bottom and ask it in the comments!

What are my options if I can’t finish a character right now?

You can either “drop” a pending character (have the page deleted) or move it into “storage”.

How do I get rid of (drop) a pending character?

If you would like to drop your pending character please pop over to your Private Messages and send one to Kitsufox.

What form should I used to create a character?

This depends entirely on what sort of character you are creating.

If you read carefully on the Character Creation Page under the tab that applies to the type of player that you are making, you will find out what your options are and be able to tell which of the forms you should be using.

What are the expectations for character quality?

Our Expectations for Character Quality are outlined on This page. You can see that they are not unreasonable, and if you are a moderate writer you should be able to meet them with little trouble.

How can you have quality requirements and length minimums and still consider the game “Free-for-all”?

We’re free-for-all, but we have requirements because we believe that labels like “Literate” or “Advanced” are inappropriate for a game and put up walls that prevent new players from being exposed to RPers of higher levels who can inspire them to growth as writers and role players. In taking on a free for all point of view in which we refuse players access to our game only if they refuse to learn or work to reach our minimum standards if they are above that users’ current level so that no user will be turned away simply because they lack practice or experience.

Why can’t I list a cat as a mate? I can only get them to show up as “mated with”!

Amongst the clan cats we simply don’t acknowledge “Mates” because there is no formal recognition and thus no formal way to have “my mate”. You may wish to view the Clan Mates & Mating Traditions Documentation for full details.

Where non-clan cats are concerned the “Mated with” was selected over “mates” to allow for listing of cats even when commitments are not implied by the mating. It is expected that the history of the character will be used to reveal whether or not the cats mated with are bonded or not.

How do I change the group my character belongs to?

Assuming that your character’s group change is backed up by RP, you can alter your character’s group by scrolling down to the bottom of the character sheet and clicking the words “Full Edit”. Unlike the normal form you get by clicking the word “Edit”, this form grants access to all options, including options for every group in the game. You’ll just edit as needed here, and then save the page again.

On the Subject of Aging

Age is a complex question in the world of our game. In accordance it has resulted in a rather large file having been developed.

Question not answered on this page? Scroll to the bottom and ask it in the comments!

Where can I find the rules that apply to cat age here?

The age rules for Clan Cats can be located on THIS page.

Why is 50 Moons considered an appropriate age for an elder? That’s not even 4 years old!

Feral cats are not quite the same as domestic cats. Their life is much harsher than your average domestic cat.

Domestic pets are fed by their owners, groomed, sheltered… Feral cats have to fend for themselves. They are subject to battles, hunger, weather, wounds and diseases in a way a domestic cat will never be. That in and of itself causes them to age faster, and with age comes failing physical abilities. A cat that can no longer perform warrior duties for the clan as he once did is bound to become an elder in most situations. That cat is no longer fit to serve the clan as a warrior. He has become a liability, and thus should not keep his warrior rank. He turns into an elder, respected for his wisdom and experience, but no longer acting as he did on his young age.

But is there a fixed age for a cat to become an elder?

No. Some cats age faster, some slower. Use common sense. A cat who has a complicated life is prone to become an elder earlier than a cat of the same age that leads an easier life – much like the domestic cat/feral cat idea. Nonetheless, as the cat ages, he will start having all sorts of ailments and physical failure. You cannot expect your 50 moons old warrior to be as fit as a newly made warrior. His joints will ache in the cold days, his eyesight will not be so keen, his reflexes are slower… He is gradually heading toward his place among the elders.

How does in-character retirement work?

A character that is on the brink of becoming an elder may undergo in-character retirement. He is too old to be useful to his clan as a warrior – and so, the warrior rank is taken away from him. He becomes an elder, honored among his clan. He has no longer required to perform warrior duties, and can spend his last moons enjoying the rest he has deserved throughout his life.

Out of character, the rank of your cat will need to be turned to ‘Elder’ in the character viewer. You may do so by editing your character page.

What happens if a cat refuses to retire?

If a cat refuses to retire (such as by refusing to respond affirmatively during the retirement ceremony) in a situation where continuing as a warrior is beyond their physical abilities the leader is within their rights to retire that cat despite their disagreement. The safety of the cats around them would be placed in jeopardy if they continued as a warrior, and the good of their clanmates is considered more important that the mere desires of one cat.

Can my elder sire or bear kits?

The short, simple answer is yes.

The long, in depth answer is yes, on the condition that all supporting RP is in place and your cat is physically fit enough to handle what may come. Keep in mind the older a cat is the more likely that complications will occur. The complication chance percentages are detailed in the Litters Department.

I don’t want my elder character to die, but I want a new character and need the slot!

Elder characters do not count against your character limit.

You can have as many in-character promoted elders as you want. Keep in mind that excessive numbers of IC elder promotions will not be tolerated (due to realism requirements, we can’t have a single player using all available elder slots within a single group).

When do kits start using the dirt-place?

At around 3 weeks old, when “‘Litterbox’ behavior practices begin”. More details can be found in our Clan Cats Age Document.

On the Subject of Adopting and Adoption of Characters

Where do I find Characters Available for Adoption?

You will find the characters for adoption in the Adoptions Department along with a number of rules, instructions, and explanations.

When will the ability for players to offer characters become available?

At the moment, Kitsufox has no immediate plans to re-implement this with any haste, and in accordance, no timeline for the restoration of this program is available. If you have a legitimate reason to which to drop a couple of characters (IE: Not enough time to adequately play the number of characters you have due to real life obligations) just drop a line to Kitsu and she will do her best to facilitate whatever needs doing.

How do characters end up confiscated?

Characters end up confiscated for two reasons:

  1. The player has gone AWOL for at least a month, and the character has gone idle for lack of a player.
  2. The player has violated some rule that was severe enough to warrant ejection from this game.

Who decides who gets a character up for adoption?

It depends on the adoption itself. I’ve compiled a list.

  • General Adoptions – Admin Team
  • Confiscations – Admin Team
  • NPC Family – Player of Related PC
  • IC Litters – Parental Players

Why Can’t I…

Be of X Lineage?

Why can’t my character’s parents be “Great Warriors”?

Greatness is, firstly, a matter of opinion. Secondly, it is something that belongs to PCs (Player Characters) rather than NPCs (Non-player Characters). Your characters’ parents, without the history to establish their greatness, would have no right to it. If they’re not dead, they’d be off-camera (not RPed) the majority of the time. That’s not conducive to Greatness.

Why can’t I have my character descended of a leader or deputy?

This is more complicated than a simple “no”. You can, in fact, be descended of leader/deputy characters if the person in charge of making choices on behalf of that leader/deputy agree to the genetic relationship.

The first step if you wish to be related to one of the game’s deputies or Clan Leaders is to consult the Leader or Deputy Histories. From there you can examine the character sheets and family trees of the various characters you might select. If there isn’t a character sheet for a name you can question Kitsufox on the matter. From there you should reach out to the various players and ask if you can have permission to create a character that is part of the family tree.

Once you have permission you can create the character but the players of characters you are directly related to will have to PM Kitsufox so that she can record those grants of permission.

Why can’t my character be the offspring of a medicine cat?

Any time a medicine cat reproduces an entire clan would be subjected to a huge risk, making the action into a very very large plot. Since this would be an immensely major event and have very longstanding ramifications an MC breeding would be subject to plot approvals and a great number of things like that. It is not something that will ever be permitted off camera.

If a plot was presented to me, one that made the Staff believe that these cats would actively violate the core tenants of the code and the society it might be possible for it to happen on camera in the game some day.

Look this way

Why can’t my character have red eyes?

Genetics.

While CoSC is rather free and loose with eye colors, I’ve never seen a cat with red eyes. Find me a picture from a legitimate source posted on the origin website, and at least a semi-reliable genetic reference and we’ll talk.

Feel free to substitute Violet for red, or metallic anything, or any other completely unnatural color.

Why can’t my character be white tabby?

This is another question that is attributed to genetics. If a marking, pattern, color, or color combination does not exist in domestic cats in nature it does not exist at CoSC where we use real genetics to decide what kittens look like.

Feel free to substitute any other unnatural color, pattern or marking for white tabby. (IE: Dalmation-type spots, colored feet with a white body, ect).

Be Something

Why can’t I create a kit?

Because if we let kits get created without IC Family and the like not only would the 6 IC Moons (12 RL Months) be rather a drag, but the clans would be overrun with kits (and eventually apprentices). We fight to maintain population balances and this is one of the ways we accomplish it.

If you’re interested in adopting a Kitten you can check the Adoptions Department to see if any are available.

Why can’t I create an apprentice?

CoSC works hard to balance many things. We balance realism against the game canon, clan numbers against each other, and rank numbers against one another. Balance if one of many aspects that keep apprentices on the ban list.

Another factor is how few mentors there really are in each clan. Mentoring is a privilege, not a right. Cats who are unsuited to the task or out of favor with the leader can (and frankly, should) go to the elder’s den without having mentored an apprentice. This severely limits the number of apprentice slots, which PC Progeny have priority to receive.

Why can’t my character be a Queen Already?

It ties into the reasons that we don’t permit kit and apprentice creation, on top of the fact that don’t permit litters of Player Characters (PCs) to be fathered or born by Non-player Characters (NPCs). (Rules reference: Litters Department.)

It should be noted that at CoSC we do not consider Queen a rank held by cats who are not currently pregnant or raising kittens. That means that a cat cannot remain a queen following having a litter and avoid returning to Warrior Duties. There simply isn’t enough work in the nursery for something like that to not be a dangerous burden on the clan.

Why can’t my character be the absolute best?

Because your character is not a superhero. It is normal.

Really, I can’t think of anything more that needs to be said about this.

Why can’t my character be super-strong and very agile all at once?

Once again, your character is not a superhero. If it builds up the massive muscle for super-strong then extreme agility becomes impossible. While it is possible to be average at both, mixing them in even parts that aren’t half and half just don’t really work.

Why can’t my character be a rogue or loner of kittypet who joined the clans? It happens in the books ThunderClan all the time!

The books have a prophecized kittypet leading ThunderClan, while CoSC had a red-furred psychotic bigot who thinks ‘kill on sight’ is an acceptable policy for Rogues, Loners and Kittypets even with the code.

We have our own game history, with involves a fairly recent war. and we have more than enough characters of non-clan blood who’ve joined in the last generation. While IC Joining might happen in some clans, they have to happen IC and won’t be permitted prior to a character going into the game as a PC.

Why can’t my character be created with a reputation?

Reputation indicates that your character has gone above “normal” off screen. This violates the idea that impressive actions by characters should happen on screen whenever possible. Due to this we avoid creating characters with a reputation beyond their immediate group.

EXCEPTIONS
For Plots: In the case of a character created with a plot in mind, characters with an existing reputation might be permitted.
With Special Permission: The Administration might permit a character with a reputation with special permission. These situations will be rare, and to be permitted one you must request a private discussion via the appropriate channels to talk to he Administration and make a pitch.

Why can’t my character have a prophecy in its past?

Characters who are newly created cannot have taken part in the prophecies of the past because those prophecies were played out in the game and the happenings are set in stone. If your character was alive then it’s assumed that they quietly did their duty without attracting any significant level of attention to themselves.

This relates to the general rule the limits and regulates prophecy through the the Administration team. Please consult that General Rule prior to asking for an exemption to or more information about this rule.

Play Something

Why can’t I make a Rogue, Loner or Kittypet?

Because we’ve decided that the ranks of clan origin simply wouldn’t be effective to use for PCs not of clan origin. Rogue and Loner don’t have an exact translation (they were pretty fuzzy to start with), Kittypets are called “Domestic” here. We also have “Feral” and “Semi-feral”. Full details are available in PSA #19.

Why can’t I have a character that isn’t a cat?

The point of CoSC is to RP as cats. Most specifically clan cats. We permit non-cat characters only as plot-related NPCs who are necessary for story reasons only. This is because it would dilute the goal and purpose of the game to permit players to play any species they desire. If you feel you have a plot/story reason/ect that warrants a non-cat NPC, please contact Kitsufox to discuss it, but keep in mind that such requests are rarely approved.

Why can’t I play a StarClan Cat?

Here at CoSC we don’t play StarClan cats because we have chosen to focus on the earthly realm because it is simply more interesting. In StarClan cats can no longer come to harm, age or otherwise truly grow. In accordance we have focused on the more dynamic realm. StarClan cats are played occasionally when they appear to or otherwise interact with an earthly cat, but such events must be approved by the administration team.

If you feel you have a situation that warrants an IC appearance by a StarClan cat you play (your name is listed on the character sheet and it appears on your character list) please contact Kitsufox to request permission.

Why can’t my character be the reincarnation of a StarClanner?

CoSC does not consider reincarnation to be a part of their take on the Warriors World. It is considered to go against fundamentals of the StarClan theology and thus is considered to be beyond the abilities of StarClan to return spirits to the earthly world in a permanent fashion. This ideal goes hand in hand with the inability of StarClan cats to physically effect the world. Stuffing a new spirit into a kitten is a significant change to force into the world.
