The night stretched long, especially for a soon to be mother to freshly born kits. Her body lay curled in the medicine cats den, comforted by the medicine cat's scent. Her discomfort was long, arduous as labor caused her body to clutch and stretch trying to find comfort where there seemed there was none. It was only until the first rays of sunlight that Otterwhisker managed to find any success in her efforts, her yowls probably echoing throughout the warren.
The first would be the hardest, but eventually her struggles produced a tiny molly, a bundle of blue ticked tabby fur. Instinct took over and turned uncomfortably to lick the kit clean, waiting for its cries, before laying her head back to continue. There was still more to come.
With barely any effort the second arrived, much to her surprise, and just as quickly cleaned the small seal mackeral mink molly, purring between laps.
Third came alongside force and more pain, a second struggle as her body clenched. Another molly, this time. Another blue ticked tabby, only with a slightly darker body... Her energy was waning, but still managed to rasp her tongue over her as well.
For a moment she believed she was done, but another wave of contractions brought the final kit. Lastly a tom... Otterwhisker couldn't have been more proud. Panting from efforts she did her duties of cleaning her last kit before collapsing, wondering if that was truly the end of it all.

As Otterwhisker groomed the tiny bundle of blue ticked fur, it squirmed and practically burst into life. Despite being just born, she was loud- squealing to her heart's delight as she pulled herself along the mossy bed her mother laid in. A rather ferocious one, she was.
She nuzzled against her mother's soft belly, squeaking all the while until she finally found a spot to suckle and latched on. She wiggled a bit to get comfortable, but after that she seemed to finally calm down- for now.

Warm...Comfortable, a bit cramped, but warm... Until it wasn't.
A dark shape emerged into the light, and while she couldn't discern it, but was left colder and oddly wanting to be closer. She let out a squeak at the touch of a tongue, but it softened to a murmur, a murmur that sounded almost like a purr as the touch of a nose guided her to her mother's soft underbelly.
Warm again. Close again. Nestled up against the bodies of her siblings and her dam, Merrykit easily latched, tiny forepaws kneading against fur and moss as a comfortable place was attained again. Contented.

There is peace even in the storm...

The numbness of floating engulfed the third-born right up until it didn't anymore.
Shifting, squeezing, stretching, then a cold and a damp she had never known before replaced the warmth and tightness of her original home.
It wasn't until she became aware of the first rasp and coughed to clear her lungs that she took her first breath of air. The smells of dry grass, warm and sweet coupled with the sourness of amniotic fluid and a background of the rich spiciness of dried herbs filled her. She stilled for a moment, just breathing before she tired of it.
With the jerk and a yowl that was thin and high pitched with youth did she begin to move closer to the warm, milky scent of her mother. She only quieted when she found Otterwhisker's side and got a taste of her first meal.
